Giveaway :: The Woodsman Shop
Just in time for the holidays, The Woodsman Shop, my adorable husband, is giving away a set of white letter tiles LET IT SNOW + a snow flake.
These tiles make me think of White Christmas with Bing Crosby and Rosemary Clooney singing "Snow" on the train ride to Vermont.
His shop opened this month on Etsy and is full of holiday inspired art.
I'd like to introduce you to Abraham Bates and The Woodsman Shop :: http://www.etsy.com/shop/thewoodsmanshop
How would you describe your work?
Rustic-modern art made from reclaimed wood and created for living environments.
How did you get started?
A year ago my neighbor gave me his old chop saw. I built a small cottage house in our backyard for my wife as a Mother's day present. Determined to surprise her, I framed in the walls by balancing them on ladders and tying them to the roof of our garage. It was a rewarding experience to build something I created. Since then I began experimenting with reclaimed wood, paint, letters, numbers, and images.
Where do you find inspiration?
Marcel Duchamp-who was the originator of found art. I enjoy the challenge taking something that was originally discarded and making it into art.
Jean Michel Basquiat-who was the king of graffiti art in NYC. My addiction to painting on boards comes from his work.
Portland-the culture of the city I live, with it's bridges, bikes, art, music, coffee, and people.
What is something unique about you?
I have four kids and I think each one is a character in a novel. Abigail, the aspiring artist, Ethan, the introspective writer, Sophia, the leading actress, and Charlotte the beautiful dancer. I also have a twin brother and drink copious amounts of good coffee.
To enter the giveaway head over to The Woodsman Shop on Etsy and add his shop to your favorites. You can also have an additional entry by liking his facebook page here. Then come back to my blog and leave a comment letting me know. This giveaway is open to residents of the US.
The giveaway closes on Wednesday 28th at 5pm PST and will be announced on my blog the following day. This giveaway is officially closed...check back tomorrow to see who the winner is.

The Bates Annual Christmas Tree Hunt ::
It's tradition in our family to cut down a tree the weekend of Thanksgiving. In the morning I put on a crock-pot of chili and we all bundle up with excitement.
This year we set out to find the least expensive tree. Where do you go for a good deal...craigslist. My husband announced, "here is a farm advertising any size Noble tree for $5"...perfect!
Micah (my husbands brother) and his wife Johannah, who recently moved to Portland joined us this year which added to the fun. The day was full of adventure and we found a lovely tree. The owners of the farm also gifted us a trunk full of boughs and holly. My heart was ready to burst with delight. Abigail declared today her favorite day of the year!

Charlotte's Four Month Photos ::
This time with you has gone way too quickly! It is amazing how much you have changed in just a few months. I love the way you talk to me and your laughs are just so amazing. Your favorite is Abigail. If she is in the room, you brighten up. You love to talk to her and she is trying to teach you how to crawl, which delights you. Sophia adores you and I often find her playing next to you or reading you books. She even begged to have you come to the attic to play with her. I love seeing your siblings welcome you into the family. Ethan is very protective of you and sits with you in the car while mommy takes Sophia in.
You brighten my days and nights oh my sweet Gracie Girl!
